Tidy Up History XP, Levels & Abilities

Level up from restoration work and unlock skills that tame the messiest museum wings.

Abilities and XP

Every wiped stain and seated artifact in Tidy Up History pushes you forward. Casual Human’s cozy loop awards XP as you restore the museum, then lets you unlock abilities that make increasingly complex exhibits manageable. You are not grinding mobs — you are grinding excellence. Spend those levels wisely and late wings feel fair; ignore them and denser halls feel like unpaid overtime.

How XP is earned

XP comes from doing the museum’s real jobs:

If a session feels “empty,” you are probably wandering without finishing tasks. Complete small loops; XP likes closure.

What abilities are for

Abilities exist to reduce friction on complex exhibits. Exact names can vary by menu presentation, but useful categories in this genre — and the ones you should prioritize conceptually — include:

  • Cleaning efficiency — faster or broader dirt clears when halls get filthy.
  • Carry / stack helpers — move more fossils or artifacts per trip.
  • Highlight / sense tools — spot matching pieces, messes, or interactables.
  • Repair boosts — shorten Handyman sessions on broken fixtures.
  • Placement quality-of-life — steadier or smarter seating aids for mounts and cases.

Cosmetics and novelty skills can wait until the museum’s pain points are gone. Throughput first.

Early-game spending priorities

In the first few levels:

  1. Take anything that speeds basic cleaning — you will clean forever.
  2. Add a carry improvement before dinosaur halls explode with parts.
  3. Grab a highlight style tool when mystery piles grow and your eyes tire.
  4. Invest in repair help before entering heavily damaged wings.

Revisit the ability menu after every level-up; do not hoard points “for later” while suffering now. Later wings assume you have tools.

Launch Hotfix 1.0.1 — cleaning before Porter 2

Launch Hotfix 1.0.1 explicitly addressed softlocks from not prioritizing cleaning skills. It also raised the level requirement for Porter 2 so players must unlock a few cleaning skills before reaching Level 5. Casual Human wants early builds to include cleaning investment instead of racing straight into porter comfort.

Play the gate honestly:

  • Treat Porter 2 as a mid-early milestone, not an automatic Level 5 pickup.
  • Spend your first points into cleaning efficiency even if carry looks tempting.
  • If a hall feels softlocked, finish a dirty micro-zone, buy a cleaning skill, then re-test before assuming a missing key—pair with Keys and Wings only after cleaning tools are online.

This wiki’s early advice always favored cleaning first; 1.0.1 makes that pacing a hard requirement for Porter 2.

Mid-game reshuffle

Once multiple wings are open — prehistoric plus early human history — your bottleneck shifts:

  • If you walk too much, carry skills win.
  • If you cannot find parts, highlight skills win.
  • If dirt volume spikes in a new wing, refresh cleaning upgrades.
  • If identification stalls, remember abilities do not replace books — go study.

Balance time between XP chores and knowledge. Levels without identification still leave labeled exhibits incomplete.

Late-game comfort builds

Toward Ancient China, Medieval Europe, Mesoamerica/Andean, Indigenous North America, and remaining dinosaur work, comfort abilities matter more than raw novelty. You are protecting your wrists and attention for the final Complete [room] push. Pair ability comfort with good Controls hygiene (sensitivity, breaks, remaps).

XP farming without feeling sleazy

You do not need exploit routes. Honest farming:

  • Finish leftover dirt in “mostly done” rooms.
  • Complete one skeleton sitting at 80%.
  • Repair the last broken fixtures you skipped.
  • Place a staged pile of already-identified artifacts in one focused trip.

These chores advance Achievements and XP simultaneously — Master Cleaner, Assembler, Handyman, Curator overlaps are your friends.

Abilities and wing timing

Before using a key on a large new wing, check whether you are about to level. Opening a notorious mess one ability short of a cleaning upgrade feels bad. If you are 90% to a level, finish a small task first, spend the point, then open the door. The Walkthrough assumes you are upgrading as you go.

Single-player pacing note

There is no co-op partner to cover your weak skills. Your ability bar is your staff. Spec into the chores you dislike most so the museum stays cozy instead of chore-like. Windows Steam play with full controller support makes long upgrade sessions easy — just remember to pause and spend points.

Common mistakes

  • Never opening the ability menu after level-ups.
  • Buying novelty first while cleaning remains slow.
  • Hoarding points through two full wings of suffering.
  • Expecting abilities to identify objects without knowledge books.
  • Opening dense wings underspecced for carry and clean speed.

Suggested checkpoint reviews

At each checkpoint, ask:

  1. What frustrated me in the last hour — walking, spotting, wiping, repairing, or seating?
  2. Do I have an unspent point that addresses that frustration?
  3. Is my next Museum Rooms target going to amplify that pain?
  4. If yes, earn one more level with a tidy chore before unlocking the next gate.

Tie-in to the grand opening

Abilities are how a lone curator restores an entire institution. Museum Owner energy is not only unlocking doors — it is becoming competent enough to finish what those doors hide. Spend XP like hiring specialists: cleaner, porter, researcher’s lamp, repair tech. Your future self, standing in a finished hall, will thank you.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I earn XP quickly?

Finish complete micro-loops: clean a zone, repair fixtures, place identified pieces, seat skeleton parts. Wandering without finishing pays poorly.

Which abilities should I buy first?

Prioritize cleaning skills before Porter 2 / Level 5 per Hotfix 1.0.1, then carry and highlighting. See Launch Hotfixes and Dinosaur Skeletons.

What changed about Porter 2 in Hotfix 1.0.1?

Its level requirement rose so you unlock a few cleaning skills before Level 5—full notes on Launch Hotfixes.

Do abilities replace knowledge books?

No. Abilities reduce friction; identification still needs study via Knowledge Books.

Should I hoard ability points?

No. Spend into your current bottleneck after each level so new wings from Keys and Wings stay cozy.
